Road Race Wrap up, May 2010
Written by Craig Odermatt
Tuesday, 18 May 2010
A busy
spring of racing on the roads came to an end recently. The annual Sooke River
10K marked the end of the 2010 Island Race Series. In addition to the race
awards they gave out series awards. Pacific Athletics' Craig Odermatt won the
prize for top master in the series. In addition to having a strong competitive
season Craig showed his skill as a coach as his athlete Melissa Ross captured
the overall women's title for the 2010 Island Race Series.
After that were the two major 10K races in BC. At
the annual Times Colonist 10K Pacific Athletics veteran Craig Odermatt ran an
excellent 32:29 to place 21 out of 10 000. That led into the Sun Run 10K. Due
to the Olympics the Sun Run was forced into May instead of it's usual April
date. This did open it up to a few more top people than normal. In a very
stacked race Craig Odermatt was able to improve on last year's placing and
place 26 out of approximately 50 000 in a time of 32:22. In addition Craig made
his official Masters debut and captured prize money as 3rd master overall. Now
it is time for Craig and the rest of Pacific Athletics to race some fast ones
on the track.
The Senior Power/Speed group has
competed in three meets this year in Hawaii, Irvine and Glendale, California.
Maggie Hanlon went under 12.00 seconds for the first time with
an 11.97 at the Steve Scott Invitational but the result was
negated by a 2.1 wind. She followed it up with a legal 12.01
(1.3) at the Oxy Invitational and included a 24.23 (0.8) second
best ever. Anastasia Pearse ran a PB 60.74
in the 400m hurdles at the Steve Scott meet to finish 2nd the highest placing at
the two California Invitationals. Aleisha Cobb began her
quest for the World Junior Standard in the long jump with a
5.89m (0.0) in the Terry Albritton meet in Hawaii and followed
it up with a third place 5.64m (2.0) at the Oxy Invitational

VIKES Invitational
Written by Sean Baynton
Monday, 10 May 2010
Centennial Stadium, University
of Victoria
Saturday,
June 19th, 2010
Open to age groups Midget, Youth, Junior and Senior.
Order of events will be Women then Men, oldest to
youngest exceptfor the sprint hurdles.
This meet is sponsored by Pacific Athletics and the
University of Victoria Vikes.
The winter racing season is fast giving way to the busy
spring. The latest stop in the Island Series was the annual Comox Half marathon.
Pacific Athletics' veteran Craig Odermatt was fresh off an excellent 15:25 5K. A
23 sec improvement over the year before and best time in 8 yrs. Craig has shown
that half marathon could be a strong point but is still fairly new to the event.
After having to train mostly by himself Craig was able to have a strong race and
run his second best half marathon time ever (1:11:22) narrowly missing a new
personal best. A strong second half (negative split) allowed him to come on
strong and place 3rd overall and for the 5th consecutive time capture the
masters title in the 2010 series. There are now only 2 races left in the Island
Series. By completing a 5th one, Craig has now qualified and has clinched the
Masters title and has a good chance to finish 2nd or 3rd in the overall series.
Next up will be the annual Times Colonist 10K which will also include Pacific
Athletics' Maggie Woodward.
The busy winter of racing is rolling right along. The
latest stop in the Island Series was the annual Bazan Bay 5K in Sidney. The
National Triathlon Centre came out in force which led to a very stacked race.
Pacific Athletics' veteran Craig Odermatt has been having a strong 2010 so far.
A 10K in January that was over 20 sec faster than the year before. Then a strong
12K. That led into the Bazan Bay 5K. Craig managed to race an excellent 15:25
5K. A 23 sec improvement over the year before. Also his best 5K road time in 8
yrs. It led to a tie for 8th overall, only 5 sec away from 5th overall. For the
4th consecutive time Craig captured the masters title in the 2010 series. Double
Olympic medallist Simon Whitfield captured the overall title.
Annual MANURE SALE - March 27/28th at UVic
stadium parking lot. It's time to sell Manure again...less than three weeks to
the pickup dates. Price is $5.00 per bag and $20 for 5 bags. Each
family is expected to sell 25 bags. In 2009, one athlete sold 144 bags!! It
enabled him to have all his travel funded through his athlete account, even to
Toronto.
